Darmian: Quick

New blood

After a summer fuelled by little more than rumour so far for Manchester United, we have had some seemingly solid progress on the transfer front this week.

Most recently, the problem right back area now looks likely to be filled by the canny Italian defender, Matteo Darmian. The 25 year old has played over a dozen times for Italy and looks to be a technically excellent fullback. Reports from Sky today state:

Manchester United have agreed a fee with Torino for Italy international right-back Matteo Darmian, according to Sky Italia sources.

In other news, we reported yesterday on how Southampton manager Ronald Koeman confirmed that Manchester United had made a bid for Morgan Schneiderlin. Though it fell below their valuation we expect another bid soon and ex-Manchester United keeper, Mark Bosnich, said:

“Morgan Schneiderlin is pretty much a done deal, that will go ahead from what I’ve heard.”

The right back slot is obvious. Antonio Valencia has worked manfully there for the last year, even though it’s not his favoured position. But his defending has let him down at times and Darmian will come in as a straight swap.

As for Schneiderlin, it could be horses for courses. In the biggest games, against top opposition, we might expect both he and Michael Carrick to shield the defence for Manchester United. But against lesser opposition we might see one or the other play.

At any rate, we think that, if these two come in, the best team will look as follows. Let’s have your thoughts.

We must add on schneiderlin to the squared because we actually need to get a good holding midfielder and a striker
