Wouldn’t it be lovely if Manchester United could, for once, get all their transfer business done early?
They would have had their targets sorted long ago but getting the players to put pen to paper is obviously an entirely different matter.
On Thursday, Pep Guardiola reopened the Bastian Schweinsteiger to Manchester United can of worms by stating that:
“I have already said, read and heard a lot of things about Basti, but his future depends on him,”
While he also went on to state that..
“I think he will stay, but only he can decide. If he stays, that would be the perfect decision for me. He is a top player.”
…there is a sense here that Pep wouldn’t be devastated if the player leaves. Top coaches tend to put the shutters up when questioned about players who they see as crucial to their plans. Accordingly we may have expected something along the lines of ‘he’s not for sale, it’s as simple as that,’ if he was totally against selling.
What would happen, for example, if Pep were asked about Thomas Muller? Would he be as laissez faire about the future of the player? We aren’t so sure.
Schweinsteiger would be a decent addition to Manchester United – he’s seen by many as the top target for the midfield for LvG – but we still feel that Morgan Schneiderlin represents a far better investment. And Manchester United’s indecisiveness on the Schneiderlin deal may yet push the 25 year old in to the arms of another grateful club.
Manchester United fans: should the club forget about Schweinsteiger and concentrate on Schneiderlin?
