To say Manchester United have made big changes to their squad over the last two years is something of an understatement.

Fergie masterminded a barely believable quarter of a century of success and his squad looked fairly healthy, having won the league in his swansong season.

This was arguably his strongest XI in his final campaign in charge.

But first David Moyes came in and made various changes, bringing in Mata and Fellaini. Then Louis van Gaal really tore the place up as he oversaw the departures of Rio, Nemanja, Patrice, Chicharito, Welbeck, Fletcher, Anderson, Nani and various youngsters.

We haven’t even got to the meat of the summer activity yet but, we are lead to believe that Nani will soon depart for good and RvP could well be on his way too this summer. David de Gea also looks set for Real Madrid.

We expect a few major arrivals this summer. But even as things stand, Louis’s best XI is almost unrecognisable from the one which Fergie left us with.

Both successors to Fergie felt that big changes were needed and it still seems very much as if we are in a transitional period at Manchester United. Perhaps, by Christmas, we will see the beginnings of the next great Manchester United vintage.

On paper LVG’s team looks stronger cos of the “bid” names on parade. But SAF’s team was more efficient and knew how to grind out results when it mattered most. I give it to Fergie’s 11
