Aston Villa

Another Oddity: Why aren’t Manchester United bidding for this total bargain?

Latest reports suggest that Aston Villa have made a bid for Asmir Begovic. The Times says:

Aston Villa’s offer for Asmir Begovic has been dismissed as derisory by Stoke City.

Stoke rate the Bosnia goalkeeper from £8 million to £10 million, but it is understood that Villa’s bid was around half of that valuation.

Begovic is a top quality player and you would imagine that clubs higher up the table than Aston Villa are after him. So, if they were to pull off a massive coup from under the noses of their competitors, they surely should have at least bid the asking price.

But we can’t understand why Manchester United haven’t made a move.

Even if each Louis van Gaal intends to use Victor Valdes as his number one next season Begovic would provide the sort of top quality competition that Anders Lindegaard wouldn’t.

We can only assume that Manchester United are planning a raid for Hugo Lloris, with Valdes as backup because, otherwise it’s inexplicable that they haven’t tried to sign such a bargain.

At 28 this lad has the lot; Premier League and international experience – Begovic has played 172 times for Stoke and even has a goal to his name for the club – great hands and real presence. He is also an excellent distributor of the ball.

Overall the Bosnian stopper, of some 41 international caps, really is an excellent all rounder and he’d be our very next piece of business if we held the Manchester United purse strings.

Let’s see the lad in action. Manchester United fans: should Louis make a move?

I really hope Sherwood gets this guy even at the full asking price he is a bargain. Not sure how we can raise the money without selling a top player after all where will it come from with Lerner having one foot out the door and God knows who having a foot partially in. It must be hell trying to conduct any business at the club just now, hope this is all resolved soon. If Sherwood could get this keeper, having git Richards that will be a great start for our summer.
