After Clyne and Firmino are Manchester United set to lose out to rivals again?

Liverpool are having an absolutely brilliant time in the market right now. Having signed Roberto Firmino – the current darling of the Brazil team in the absence of the suspended Neymar – for a princely sum, they look to be close to completing a move for the pacy, powerful and precise England international, Nathaniel Clyne.

While it’s arguable whether Manchester United actually needed Firmino, it’s difficult to understand why they didn’t make a move for Clyne. With a paucity of quality at right back the Englishman would have bought consistency and a tireless work ethic to that flank.

Alas Liverpool look to have won the race for his signature too. Bravo Mr. Rodgers.

But latest reports suggest that the Merseyside giant could be about to trump Manchester United again – this time for the bullish centre forward Christian Benteke.

It is debatable whether Manchester United actually consider the Belgian to be a target. There have been rumours that the Old Trafford club is showing an interest.

But if Manchester United aren’t interested, why not? Benteke is quick, powerful and has great ball control. He’s scored 49 goals in 99 games for an Aston Villa side under regular threat of relegation – he hit 13 of their 31 league goals last season.

He’s got a better goals to games ratio in England than even Wayne Rooney and, at 24, he’s got years left in the tank.

Manchester United are clearly looking at elite talent this summer. There are question marks as to whether Benteke ticks all the boxes.

But we genuinely believe that, whoever signs him, will be getting a top player who will add even more finesse to his list of outstanding qualities in the coming years.

He’s got all the raw talent to become one of the jewels of The Premier League – a Drogbaesque powerhouse of the English game – and Liverpool may be about to get another one over on their rivals in a summer that is looking increasingly rewarding for the Anfield club.

As a Liverpool fan, I wasn’t sure about Benteke at first but he does score goals and he isn’t just a Carroll to pump high balls into, Benteke has pace, control and the strength of a buffalo. With Coutinho & Firmino behind him, he could be our 20 goal striker.
