Regular readers will know that we have a long held suspicion that Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger doesn’t like to spend top whack on players whose main role isn’t a creative one.
Consequently Arsenal have struggled to balance a world class attack with a defence which sometimes looks easy to break down.
For our money they need another top anchor man and a beast of a centre back. Which is why we think that Geoffrey Kondogbia – who can play both roles equally well – would be the perfect signing.
But latest reports suggest that Arsenal are already resigning themselves to potentially losing out on the Frenchman and are looking at alternatives. The Express writes:
Reports in Germany suggest Arsenal have lined up a replacement transfer target if their pursuit of Geoffrey Kondogbia fails.
According to various sources, the Gunners will make a £9million bid for Dortmund defensive midfielder Sven Bender, should Kondogbia leave for Italy.
At 26 Bender is a real Steady Eddie. He’s played 7 times for the German golden generation and is a regular starter Borussia Dortmund, where he has propped up the midfield since 2009.
He doesn’t have the technique or majesty of Kondogbia and wouldn’t offer quite the same thrust going forward. But he is the sort of player who wouldn’t let Arsenal down.
Let’s take a look at the lad in action. Arsenal fans: a decent signing or is Wenger cutting corners in his defence again?
