Reports today suggest that Chelsea will address their striker shortage by investing in Gonzalo Higuain of Napoli.
While Serie A is coming back to the fore after the fallout of the match fixing scandal, Napoli may be regarded as something of a peripheral club for a player who expects to start every big game for Argentina.
It’s easy to imagine him being keen if a club with the ambitions of Chelsea came calling.
But there is obviously a balance to be found for Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. He wants a squad that is capable of winning The Champions League and dominating England. But he also needs to keep his squad happy.
It’s difficult to envisage Higuain wanting to warm the bench at any stage of his Chelsea career.
But Mourinho has always employed a 4-2-3-1 and it’s hard to see how either Costa or Higuain could play anywhere but up top – they are both genuine number 9s.
But if he can overcome that hurdle the addition of Higuain could take Chelsea onto a completely different level. For our money he’s the perfect Premier League striker. He is hard as nails and uber powerful but also has such artistry in those feet. He’s every bit a Mourinho style player.
Let’s see the lad in action. Chelsea fans: is Higuain the final piece of the jigsaw and could dh play at number 10 with Costa up top?
