Manchester United’s 23 year old centre back Phil Jones is said to be in talks over a new deal at Manchester United. The Daily Mail reports:

Jones’ contract expires next season but Sportsmail understands that he is in advanced talks over extending the deal and they are expected to come to fruition shortly.

Jones is very much one of the Manchester United players who draws polemic opinion about his worthiness for the team. Rated highly by Sir Alex and clearly Roy Hodgson, Louis van Gaal has played him 25 times over the last season but is yet to reveal whether he will pull him out of the firing line and buy a new defender for the next campaign.

We think that he’s a true Manchester United player in the making. He has made some high profile mistakes – as most youngsters do – and he has never looked like the most elegant player in the world. But neither did Nemanja Vidic and few people ever questioned his importance to the team, despite a patchy start to his career at Old Trafford.

The truth is that every top team needs a warts and all player likes Jones who is prepared to put their body – and even head – in the firing line to win a game of football.

We think that he will continue to grow at Manchester United. He was criticised by Paul Scholes during the international friendly at the weekend. Scholes said:

‘I just think at centre half he is not quite clever enough to do it,’

But Jones hit back:

‘People comment all the time about individuals,’ he said. ‘Gone are the days when I used to take notice of what people say and react to it. It doesn’t bother me one little bit anymore. I am at the stage now where I can’t be considered a young player anymore. I have got to step up, keep playing well and do what I do best.’

I believe Phil Jones’ best position to be defensive midfield as he is not afraid to put either body or head in where it matters and he reads the game better than when in central defence.
He has played defensive midfield before and did well but whether he will play there next season depends on if Van Gaal brings someone else in to do that job.
