It is interesting that some have mentioned Eden Hazard in relation to the Memphis Depay deal. The sublime Belgian seemed keen on a move to Manchester United in 2012 – he would have reinvigorated the team beautifully at that stage and perhaps even enthused Sir Alex to the point of wanting to carry on – before moving to Chelsea instead.
They won’t want the same thing to happen with another similarly rare and game-changing talent. After the transfer activity of last season, we know now that Manchester United can match the financial package offered by any other team in the world. And Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has a strong relationship with Depay after giving him his chance at international level.
Even at 21, Depay is a frighteningly good player who Ronald De Boer described as a ‘young Cristiano Ronaldo’ this week.
Certain sections of the media have gone as far as to state that Manchester United have jetted him and his agent in for talks in Manchester.
He is more than just a winger and more than just a striker. Depay can beat players, assist, score goals (he’s the top scorer in The Dutch league this season even though he doesn’t play at number 9) and also provide that vital Ronaldo-esque outlet, running with the ball from deep, when his team is under pressure. He’s fast, powerful and has a trick.
There is very little doubt that he is the man for the job at Manchester United and The Manchester Evening News – who has a firm finger on the pulse, behind the scenes at Old Trafford – said this week that Manchester United remain confident of signing the lad, despite interest from several other serious suitors.
Let’s hope, for the sake of Manchester United fans everywhere, that this lad doesn’t become another one who got away.
