Manchester United fans will be desperate for their star man, David De Gea, to sign a new contract at the club. But, with just a year left on his contract, there is a very real prospect that he could leave this summer or next.

You can’t help but feel that the reason he still hasn’t committed his future to the club is that he is enthused by the idea of joining Real Madrid, where he would enjoy up to a decade of acclaim between the sticks. And latest reports suggest that his Manchester United team mates think he wants the move too. The Mirror states:

Manchester United stars fear David De Gea is determined to join Real Madrid this summer

But we still think that he may decide to hold on and see how this exciting new project under Louis van Gaal pans out – at 24 time is very much still on his side.

There is noone who could completely satisfy Manchester United fans as a replacement. De Gea is not only the best around but he is also so entertaining to watch with his spectacular style and amazing agility.

WHY DE GEA WOULD BE MAD TO MOVE TO MADRID

But, if Manchester United do have to replace De Gea this summer, then who better to bring in than Asmir Begovic? Many believe that Victor Valdes would immediately step into the breach if De Gea left. It makes logical sense.

But Begovic is a better keeper. He was typically brilliant for Stoke against Southampton at the weekend and if Manchester United came calling he would surely be tempted. Of Mark Hughes’s desire to extend the contract of Begovic, The Daily Mail quotes him as saying:

‘We want to be a team that’s consistently in the top ten,’ said a beaming Hughes whose side rose to ninth in the table.

‘To be able to do that you need key players in key areas of the field and obviously goalkeeper is a key position in any good team and Asmir has been exceptional for us for a long time now.’

And the same source says that Manchester United have scouted the player.

Both Manchester clubs have watched the 27-year-old but Hughes thinks Stoke have a chance of persuading him to stay.

His club are naturally desperate to hold onto their man and this summer will be a critical one in the career of Asmir Begovic. But He certainly has the calibre to play for Manchester United.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans: an able replacement?
