Manchester United: Why De Gea would be mad to move to Madrid

De Gea is on fire

Catlike Genius

With painfully perennial speculation linking the magnificent Manchester United stopper David De Gea with a move to Real Madrid, we list the rather desperate reasons why he should stay at The Theatre:

Manchester United are on the up

Like any top player, De Gea will want to win the top trophies. And Real Madrid are, of course, European Champions. But history suggests that even the biggest club in the world will struggle to win it again any time soon. Their previous title came in 2002 and, even with billions of pounds spent in the interim, it took over a decade to repeat the feat.

Meanwhile, Manchester United haven’t won it since 2008 and, despite having an awful time of late, they are quite clearly now on the up. There is an almost palpable feel good factor at Old Trafford as Louis’s revolution takes shape. Van Gaal is a visionary who inspires his players and will definitely be at the club for the next two seasons at the very least. He recently suggested that he may extend his contract. It’s a great time to be a Manchester United player.

He will have Sweet Fanny Adams to do at Real Madrid most of the time

The goalkeeper’s position can be a lonely one indeed. And, even though Real Madrid are not quite at their best right now, David De Gea will find that he has much less to do in La Liga. The odd game against Barca, Valencia and Atletico will keep him busy. But he might as well stay at home and watch the Elche, Eibar and Espanol games from the comfort of his sofa.

At Manchester United, he’s the main man. Even the games which look straightforward on paper require his brilliance and he must be loving the adulation that he’s getting. Player of The Year two seasons in a row? You can forget that at Real Madrid mate.

International Prospects

De Gea is the heir apparent for the Spain No1 job. He’s the overwhelmingly obvious choice to replace Iker ‘God’ Casillas. But we all know how a big move can affect form.

De Gea is at a crucial juncture in his international life and a huge transfer could play with his performances and leave the door open for Valdes or Reina to have a two year swansong in between the sticks for Spain.

Form usually comes with stability. Carlo Ancelotti has been fantastic in Spain. But who knows who will be at the helm next season if they end this campaign without hefty silverware? And, whoever it is, may well only last for one term.

Manchester United will offer the lad more stability at a pertinent period of his comparatively coltish career.
