Expect Manchester United to spend big again this summer. But, just to separate the wheat from the chaff of the tabloid nonsense before the window opens, here are the names that you should ignore when you hear them in relation to the club.
Edinson Cavani
There is nothing wrong with this lad as a player. He’s a top striker. But Louis van Gaal is building a legacy at Manchester United and certainly doesn’t need any more strikers in their late twenties.
Gonzalo Higuain
Ditto – powerful, prolific, but simply not the right profile for Manchester United at this stage.
Cristiano Ronaldo
Manchester United fans would love him back at the club. But the chance to re-sign the lad may have gone.
Joao Miranda
The Atletico defender is a quality player but just a touch too old for Manchester United, who are trying to build for the future.
Arjen Robben
What a player Robben would have been at Manchester United. And he proved last summer at The World Cup that he is far from finished and still has lighting pace. But he’s 32 in January and he would simply be too expensive to bring to the club, with exceedingly high wages and no sell on value.
Manchester United fans: can you see any of these five arriving this summer?
