In the aftermath of the derby on Sunday, Manchester United’s triumphant captain Wayne Rooney has lifted the lid on the tactics which helped them to their first victory in 5 against their arch rivals. The Telegraph quotes him as saying:
‘We know some City players are not the best at tracking back and defending and tracking runners and we felt we could make them pay for that and we did.’
Manchester United worked so hard thoughout the game and, although there was arguably a slice of luck with two of their goals – which were perhaps offside – they seemed to have far more energy and hunger than the team in blue. This is the best Manchester Unite side we have seen since before Sir Alex left the club.
But, just like last season when the wheels began to fall off for the then Manchester United manager David Moyes and The Reds seemed to stop pulling in the same direction, the same appears to be happening for City right now. With so much money being invested into the club, it is extremely difficult to see how Manuel Pellegrini can last beyond this season.
As for Manchester United, Rooney is clearly loving life at the club again:
‘It’s great how things are going and the performances we are putting in, but it has to continue. We said earlier in the season that we were working on things and it was going to take time. It is starting to show now with the training we have been putting in. We have been working really hard.’
If Manchester United can only continue their progress next season they have to be in with a shout for the league come May 2016.
