Coming of age for Manchester United’s teenage star at Chelsea?

If Michael Carrick doesn’t make the team for Manchester United’s visit to Chelsea this weekend we have suggested that Daley Blind will take his place as the anchor man in midfield. It will be a big blow for a Manchester United side which has come to rely on Carrick more than most. Manchester United have only lost once this season when the brilliant 34 year old has been in the team.

But Blind’s move to midfield may mean a start for Luke Shaw. If fit he could get the nod ahead of Marcos Rojo and how he needs some game time after a really stop start debut season for Manchester United.

Seeing him struggle with injury at Manchester United, it’s easy to forget that this was one of the stand out performers in the league last season. He was solid as a rock in defence but also renowned for his slaloming runs forward and fantastic distribution with that left foot.

We have absolutely no doubt that Shaw will eventually make the grade at Manchester United. But with Blind playing supremely well at left back the young Englishman must take every chance to impress.

At 19 he’s got his whole career ahead of him but how he would love the chance to come of age against Chelsea this weekend, the team he supported as a boy.

Let’s remind ourselves of what this lad can do. Manchester United fans: Would you play Shaw or Rojo at left back if Carrick doesn’t make the side?
