There is a lot of bluster about Bale to Manchester United this summer. Of course it would be nice. Very nice in fact.
But we think that an even more exciting move would be Memphis Depay to Manchester United. Both would be ideal of course but, while still pricey, Depay seems eminently more gettable than the Welshman and is a player who has the world at his feet.
While Manchester United would be buying proven class in Bale, Depay represents something of a gamble. At 21 he’s still a rough diamond – albeit one who has already scored over 20 goals for PSV this season. But Manchester United are said to want him.
He’s got the same sort of acceleration as Cristiano Ronaldo – the same explosiveness off the mark and a similar ability to flummox his opponent with a drop of the shoulder. The Daily Mail quotes PSV Director Marcel Brands as saying that he reckons Depay will be on his way this summer:
‘The chances are very high that he leaves. If you see what clubs are enquiring about him, they really are the best in Europe.
‘When I talk for PSV I would say he is not ready and should continue here for another year. But I am realistic and if I worked at a big European club, I’d buy him without question.
‘With a heavy heart [we would let him go], because a great player and a great guy leaves. But we are also proud that a boy from the academy is going to make such a step.’
By the sound of things Manchester United aren’t going to have it all their own way in their attempts to sign the lad, with so many top clubs keen. But Manchester United would surely suit player who loves to be extravagant on the field of play and loves to entertain.
We think that Manchester United should prioritise the signing of Depay because he can be the sort of game-changer that is so rare in the game but that every club who wants to win The Champions League needs.
