Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal hints at youthful signings ‘sometimes you have to buy youngsters’

Putting aside the ludicrous Rooney nonsense, The Telegraph got the real scoop of the week with the exclusive interview undertaken with the ever illuminating Louis van Gaal.

The United boss goes into great detail about his methods, as you would expect from a man who is known for his meticulousness. And, having read about the great adversity that he has dealt with in his life – his dad died when he was 11 and his first wife died of cancer in 1994 – you get the sense that Manchester United fans will forever have a place in their hearts for this man, almost regardless of results. They will, at least, give him as much time as possible to succeed.

At any rate he seems tailor-made for Manchester United due to his substance, charisma and attitude to football.

Getting back to the pitch for a moment, he did suggest in his interview that he may buy in some youngsters this summer.

We don’t know about you, but names like Dani Alves don’t really get us excited. We would prefer big clubs to bring in youngsters who can develop and belong to the club over time rather than short term journeyman signings who will cost a huge amount and be gone in a couple of seasons at most.

So it’s great to hear Louis say:

“When you hold (keep) all the same players, nothing changes. You need young players. You need also talent, and personalities. Sometimes you have to buy youngsters.”

Manchester United fans will never forget the impact of players like Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo. They were so exciting to watch as teenagers because you didn’t know quite how good they could become – the sky was the limit – and both have gone on to be two of Manchester United’s greatest ever investments. United would surely be worse off in terms of trophy haul without Wazza, while Ronaldo helped the club to a Champions League trophy before adding 80m squid to the coffers.

So the policy of buying young generally works best for Manchester United and the fans will surely hope for signings like Depay, Dybala and Laporte in the summer. The odd Bale, at 25, wouldn’t go amiss either!

Manchester United fans: do you want the club to invest in youth this summer?
