So, mercifully for Arsenal fans, this one looks as if it won’t necessarily go right down to the wire. Transfers never seem to be completely straightforward with Arsenal and the work permit required for 24 year old Brazilian centre back Gabriel Paulista is still to be granted.
But the boss himself, a man who traditionally keeps his cards close to his chest with regards transfers, has admitted that the deal is almost complete.
Arsene Wenger said to BT Sport (via Daily Mail):
‘They (the reports) are accurate. It is very, very close and it should be done tomorrow.
Some Arsenal fans, that we have spoken to, are concerned about the permit and the fact that The Gunners aren’t buying a household name for the defence.
But, despite the solid service of Per Mertesacker over the last couple of years, he is definitely on the wane in our opinion. He no longer seems to be able to compete with many opposition players for pace and looks tired at times.
The addition of Paulista will bring freshness and good technique to a defence which needed help. He’s never played in this country and the big question is how long he will take to settle in. But we think, work permit allowing, he’s going to be a decent buy and really help Arsenal push for a top four place in the battle for Champions League spots – a battle which could be more fierce than ever.
Arsenal fans: pleased with the imminent signing?
