It seems more likely by the day that major improvements will have to wait until the summer. Although Manchester United appear armed and ready to do business, if the right players come along, it’s going to be difficult to persuade footballers in The Champions League that Old Trafford can’t wait until the summer.

But, as we arguably saw with Angel di Maria last summer, money talks. And Manchester United appear to have problems storing all of theirs – much better to offload some and get bums off seats again.

Latest transfer rumours, relating to Manchester United, point in the direction of PSG defender Marquinhos and Paul Pogba. Both have ridiculous price tags with Sky Sports saying of Marquinhos:

Manchester United have been told they’ll have to pay £112m for him. Barcelona, Manchester City and Arsenal have been linked with him in the past. So who is PSG’s defensive star?

As for Pogba, rumours today suggest that Manchester United have made a whopping £61.25m bid for a lad they sold for peanuts a couple of years ago.

The idea of signing Marquinhos for that kind of money is ludicrous of course. The Pogba fee is a little easier to believe.

But how would they fit in at United?

Well Marquinhos is easy to place. He would jump straight in to a defence full of holes and team up with either Marcos Rojo or Phil Jones – or both should Louis continue with the crazy notion of 3 centre backs.

As for Pogba, he can play as an anchor man, a classic box-to-box midfielder or even a number 10. He has myriad qualities and his adaptability is one of the reasons that he would cost silly money.

We would put him next to Carrick/Blind in a 4-2-3-1. So here’s our XI if Manchester United were to sign these two excellent players.
