Of course you could argue that Arsenal didn’t need to sign Alexis Sanchez in the summer – but without him The Gunners’ season would really be in tatters. And the truth is that, while Sanchez has been coming more inside of late, Arsenal were struggling on the flanks last season with Theo Walcott out. A winger seemed like a prudent addition.
But Arsenal surely don’t need any more attacking midfielders do they? There is a strong argument for buying top players when they become available, regardless of position.
But Arsene’s squad is so light in other areas of the pitch that he surely won’t spend the lions share of the kitty, as is being reported, on Spain midfielder Isco:
Arsenal are ready to pay £36.6million to sign Real Madrid sensation Isco during the January transfer window.
The Gunners have been long-term admirers of Isco, having followed him since his Malaga days, and were recently said to be eyeing up a new year move.
Let’s be clear. This is a fantastic player who can become one of the best in the world. At 22 he already looks close to the finished article. But this is precisely why Real Madrid will do all they can to hold onto him in the first instance.
If Arsenal had a balanced squad, and Isco was available, then we would be all for the purchase. But with holes in the defence and a really lightweight engine room surely Isco isn’t the answer right now?
With Ozil, Ramsey, Cazorla and Wilshere all able to do a great job in the advanced midfield areas, long term, this is not a transfer which would meet with universal approval from fans of Arsenal.
Let’s see the lad in action. Arsenal fans: too good not to buy?
