The first Manchester United – Arsenal match this season was always going to throw up loads more debate about the shock switch between the clubs for Danny Welbeck over the summer.
It’s a discussion which has divided Manchester United fans, particularly as Danny has had a decent start to his Arsenal career.
In response to questions, posed this week, about whether it was the right decision to sell Welbeck, Louis van Gaal is quoted as saying:
“For him it was a very good decision because as a line-up player he develops himself much more.
“If it was right for Manchester United is dependable on how they play, how they score and in what position we shall finish in the league.”
“Here, Danny Welbeck did not play every match. He was not a line-up player; he was more substitute than line-up,”
“With different coaches not a line-up player, then came Mr van Gaal and the world is changing? No, the world is not changing – the facts are not my facts, they’re the facts of Danny Welbeck.”
There are a lot of United fans who think that it was a seriously bad move to let the lad leave. But at least as many would regularly complain about his profligacy in front of goal during his Manchester United days.
The question is not whether Welbeck is a good player. The question is whether he’s a good enough striker to emulate Van Nistelrooy, Cantona, Rooney, Ronaldo and RvP. Because that’s where the bar is for United – that is the standard of player they want at the club – nothing less will make them dominant once more.
Falcao, RvP and Rooney are world class. When the team clicks these guys will be fighting for their places. If he’d stayed, Welbeck would have been at the back of this particular queue. So we believe that it was the right move for all parties.
