Broadsheet says Newcastle have two top transfer targets for January

Newcastle have enjoyed a meteoric rise from the ashes during October and November, recording memorable wins against Liverpool and Tottenham in the league and Manchester City in the cup.

But we have seen many a false dawn at Newcastle over the years and the real test for Alan Pardew and his men is to keep that momentum going now that we are approaching the business end of the club season.

You would imagine that Newcastle will look to add at least another striker to the ranks this winter. Despite the great form of Ayoze Perez more quality is required up top and The Telegraph reckons that Newcastle have two players in mind for January transfers:

Newcastle United are considering a January move for Serbian striker Aleksander Mitrovic as manager Alan Pardew looks to fill the gaps left by a frustrating end to the summer transfer window.

Marseille forward Andre-Pierre Gignac has also been watched regularly by Newcastle scouts, although at 28, he is at the upper end of Newcastle’s recruitment age bracket.

We have spoken about Mitrovic recently. He’s a player with guile and great technique who could light up The Premier League. But at 20, it may take time for him to assimilate.

As for Gignac, Newcastle aren’t the only interested party. The Frenchman has scored 82 league goals for Toulouse and Marseille and he has 19 caps for the French national team since his debut in 2009 – he’s bagged 5 goals for his nation.

Let’s make no mistake – both players could make a big difference to Newcastle in January and add the sort of attacking precision that has been missing for large chunks of the last year or so.

Let’s see Gignac in action. Toon Army: keen?
