Under constant pressure about the state of his defence, Louis van Gaal made the excellent point in his press conference on Friday, that if you took the Leicester game out of the equation Manchester United would have conceded less goals than league leaders Chelsea.
He said that the problems in the team, injuries aside, were more about the lack of balance at Manchester United right now.
We agree that the defence is not as bad as many believe. Any team who had so many defensive injuries would struggle – perhaps even more than Manchester United have.
The midfield is yet to really dominate a game and Juan Mata and Ander Herrera have been peripheral figures in the team of late. Herrera has been fit again for a while, since sustaining a cracked rib, but he hasn’t found his way back into the side after some patchy displays in the autumn. He’s a popular figure amongst the fans but needs to eradicate eradicate the enforced errors.
The future of Juan Mata is also the subject of constant debate. It’s difficult to know where he fits in to a fully fit side. But it’s been a long time since United had one and perhaps Mata will get another chance this weekend. What is for sure is that both the Spaniards need to offer much more if they want to cement their places in the team.
