If Manchester United are doing so badly then why are the fans of the the club generally so happy? A derby defeat would normally spell a week of misery for the red half of the city.
But this is different. This time last year, there was already a feeling of hopelessness about Manchester United under David Moyes. Viewers were getting pretty much the same performance every week and there wasn’t a clear strategy behind United’s play.
But the discerning eye can see that this is most definitely a team which is progressing. The shape of the team held firm for most of the game on Sunday and, even with ten men against the champions, there was great organisation and strength in the side.
As a unit Manchester United are far better this season. Last year the team simply couldn’t get behind the opposition defence, so slow was the build up play. There exists no such malaise now. It’s more about stupid individual errors which will eventually be ironed out. But the system itself seems to be showing progress.
Manchester United have their worst points total at this stage since 1986. But this team is most certainly on the up. Expect United to pick up points now.
