It’s almost impossible to imagine Stevie Gerrard playing for anyone but Liverpool. He did once look close to joining Chelsea but, to the eternal gratitude of the Liverpool faithful, he stayed on.
At this point in time, Gerrard’s suggestion that he could play for another club next season is a simple warning to the board that he won’t settle for a paltry contract having served the club with such distinction.
But unless Liverpool deal with this one properly it could turn into a nightmare scenario. Chelsea have had to watch in horror as Frank Lampard has been scoring goals for City this season (even against Chelsea themselves) and Manuel Pellegrini has already said that Gerrard can play at the top for a few more years – heck, he might even be tempted by the opportunity to play for a club replete with world class footballers.
Even though he’s 34, Liverpool need him. Not only for his talent on the pitch but for his leadership and mentoring skills off it.
The board needs to offer the lad a two year contract on good money and then, hopefully, Gerrard can move straight onto the coaching staff. Either way, the board needs to nip this on in the bud if they want to avoid a nasty situation.
Liverpool fans: is there a realistic chance of Gerrard going to City?
