Manchester United showed in the summer that they are still one of the biggest clubs in the world. They competed at the very top end of the transfer market in what could be seen, retrospectively, as one of their most important windows ever – the window that kept the club competitive.

But, almost since the day the lad arrived at Manchester United, we have been worried about the long-term future of current star David de Gea.

He was sporadically shaky when he started at Manchester United, in a position where every mistake is heavily scrutinised. But, despite his waif-like physique and regular errors, you could easily see the enormous potential. De Gea was a superb stopper who seemed to have glue on his gloves.

He’s developed into one of the best in the world and latest reports suggest that Real Madrid are keen:

REAL MADRID will look to sign Manchester United star David De Gea this January as Arsenal and Liverpool ponder bids for Iker Casillas.

He’s obviously going nowhere in January but with Iker Casillas and Victor Valdes coming to the end of their sensational careers at Real Madrid and Barcelona, the Spaniard seems like a natural choice for either.

We saw this coming a couple of years ago and we do think that De Gea will eventually play for one of them. But, with an exciting new project underway at Manchester United, and more Spanish speaking players in the squad than ever before, we feel that De Gea can be convinced to sign a new contract and stay for a few more years yet.

Tieing this worldie down to a new deal could be one of the best bits of business United ever do. Even if they are forced to sell him further down the line, a long contract means that Manchester United can ask silly money for a true superstar.

Manchester United fans: can any of you see De Gea spending the rest of his career at Old Trafford?
