For a footballer who had such a good time of it last season it seems unusual that Wojciech Szczęsny still has many doubters.
He did have a solid season. But is he a top keeper? One who will be remembered in years to come like David Seaman? The jury is still out. He’s not there yet anyway. And we still think that he has an unforced error in him.
He may well become a really world class keeper but, at 24, he’s got time on his side.
One of the best players on the market come January could well be Chelsea’s Petr Cech. He has said of his current status as a Chelsea substitute:
“I have not spoken to anyone, but I think they know me well enough at the club to know that the situation is definitely not the way I would imagine,”
“With the Euros (in 2016) and the national team in mind, there is no time for me to sit on the bench and not to play. If the situation will not start to improve for me, then I will want to solve it.“
At 32 this guy is mustard and still close to the top of his game. Arsenal need a world class spine if they want to win things and this would be the first step on that path.
Pull Szcezsny out of the firing line, while still giving him game time, and let him learn form one of the very best – a player who most certainly will be spoken of in future generations.
There is the argument that Chelsea won’t sell to Arsenal. But buying a player like this is a question of will and desire. Arsenal didn’t want to sell Ashley Cole, least of all to Chelsea. But The Blues showed the requisite ambition to overcome such hurdles and it was well worth it in the end.
We would dearly love to see Arsene Wenger show the same ambition with Cech.
Arsenal fans: do you need him?
