David de Gea has, of late, lifted the lid on his dark and difficult early days at Manchester United. In the aftermath of the world class performance which won United the game on Sunday De Gea said that he considered quitting Old Trafford after some dodgy performances early doors.
Thankfully he stayed and Manchester United are immeasurably better for his presence. He’s a true joy to watch and makes goalkeeping look like an art form. His handling, shot stopping and distribution all stink of class.
And he has offered an interesting opinion on some of his new team mates. De Gea is quoted in The Guardian as saying that it’s been a real experience playing behind the coltish youngsters that have recently graced the team.
“Luke Shaw and Paddy McNair are so young but they are playing so well at Old Trafford and that is amazing. Paddy has been brilliant,He keeps calm all the time and he is really good with the ball and that is important for us. He is strong and in the future he is going to be one of the best.”
McNair has indeed been incredibly composed for one so young and when he fills out he’s going to be some player for Manchester United. Having played for Spain, as well as behind the likes of Evra, Rio and Vidic, that’s high praise indeed.
In light of these recent performances from the youngsters, Louis van Gaal may decide not to invest in his defence in January after all.
Manchester United fans: do you think LvG should buy defenders in January or continue to put his faith in youth?
