So it won’t happen today or tomorrow. It may even be another way of negotiating even better terms at Real Madrid – although he has just signed a new contract – but, for the first time since his departure in 2009 we genuinely feel that Cristiano Ronaldo wants to come back to Manchester United.
He has made his disappointment about recent transfer dealings public and he may feel that he is no longer at the best paying club, with The Independent reporting that Radamel Falcao and Angel Di Maria, as well as Wayne Rooney, are now on better money at Manchester United.
At 29, and with a long contract at Real Madrid, Ronnie would be an awfully expensive acquisition and one with little sell on value. But we don’t think that would bother a club who knows full well how advantageous it would be to have this world sporting icon back at the club – on and off the field.
Because it’s a deal which would benefit United in a sporting and financial sense. Any outlay would surely be swallowed up by new found success on the pitch and an uplift in merchandise sales.
We think that Ronnie could well rejoin Manchester United at the end of this season. The question is where would you play him? It’s hard enough squeezing in all of the current attacking talent at United. If Falcao performs as expected then the club will seek to make his contract permanent. Perhaps, players like Mata and RvP (who will be 32 by this time next year) will be the ones to make way.
If Ronnie did come to Manchester United Louis van Gaal would almost certainly have to revert to a 4-3-3 or similar. Ronaldo doesn’t seem suited to a wing back role and the idea of him and Di Maria on the flanks is too good to ignore. So perhaps Falcao up top, flanked by the dazzling wingers, with Wazza in an advanced midfield role orchestrating attacks.
Sadly, we have had to cull Mata and RvP to make this formation work. See what you think.
Manchester United (4-2-3-1): De Gea, Luke Shaw, Marcos Rojo, Phil Jones, Rafael Da Silva – Daley Blind, Ander Herrera – Angel Di Maria, Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo – Radamel Falcao
