Arsenal

Stat Attack: Who has the most potent strike force of The Big 5? Chelsea, Manchester City or the Reds?

Goal Ratios

Close thing

There are way too many variables to give a categoric answer to the question. Strikers naturally score more goals when they have better players around them or spend time in easier leagues. But the stats give a very interesting insight into which strike force may come out on top as the season wears on.

What we do know is that goals win games and, with a few exceptions, the team that scores the most goals generally wins the most silverware. Liverpool scored one less goal than Manchester City last season. One more against Manchester City at The Etihad and they would have taken the crown.

So we look at the combined goals to games ratios of the three main strikers at Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal and then take an average from each strike force, in order to assess which team can be most prolific in front of goal this season.

It makes for interesting reading and it’s difficult to imagine one team running away with the league when you see the small margins which separate the top teams in what is surely, now more than ever, the most competitive elite league in Europe or even the world.

Danny Welbeck brings Arsenal’s ratio down but he’s been regularly playing out wide for Manchester United.

Interestingly Arsenal’s Lukas Podolski has a goals to games ratio equal to Liverpool’s Sturridge and Balotelli and better than Chelsea’s Costa and Remy.

Title favourites Chelsea and Manchester City have decent combined goal scoring ratios from their top three strikers, as you would expect. But the arrival of Radamel Falcao at Manchester United has shot them into the lead as the team with the best average goals to games ratio with their top three.

Few are backing Manchester United for the title right now but if this new team starts to click this weekend then they will be up there come May. Noone takes a Manchester United side for granted – even one this wounded.
