The Gunners are reportedly moving closer to bringing in yet another player with Chile forward Eduardo Vargas emerging as a top target for the club.
Reports coming out Italy indicate that the player is not wanted by Napoli and that Arsenal have offered him an exit route according to talkSPORT.
Napoli forward Eduardo Vargas is on the verge of becoming Arsenal’s fifth summer signing, according to reports in Chile.
The forward has spent the last two seasons on loan, firstly at Gremio and then at Valencia. During that time he managed to score 16 league goals in 41 appearances. But Napoli manager Rafa Benitez has ostensibly been unimpressed with Vargas in pre-season and is looking to offload him during the transfer window.
With the player reportedly set to have a medical in the coming days, Arsenal look like they have beaten both Valencia and QPR to the signing of a player who made a positive impression during the 2014 World Cup for Chile.
The move will see Vargas link up with his fellow international teammate Alexis Sanchez, something that may have proved important in his choice to join the club.
Arsenal have strengthened their squad significantly after a season where they faded in the closing stages. However, manager Arsene Wenger will no doubt be aware that more depth will be key to staying strong throughout the entire season and launching a more sustained title challenge.
Vargas can play as both a winger and a striker and will give The Gunners even more pace in their attacking line that already has Alexis Sanchez, Theo Walcott and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
While many have been crying out over the summer for a world-class striker to be brought to The Emirates, the North London club have more pressing concerns in defence and midfielder. A fee of over £40 million would most likely be necessary to bring in that calibre of forward, money that could be better spent on improving other areas.
The 24-year-old would offer value for money on a loan deal and provide squad depth. More importantly though he would offer serious competition to Oliver Giroud and Yaya Sanogo up top, two players that Wenger may not want to rely solely on throughout the entire season.
Let’s see some Vargas magic. Arsenal fans: does he boil your potatoes?
