Liverpool have been comfortably the biggest movers in The Premier League market this summer as they try to fill the gaping hole left in the side by the departure of Luis Suarez.
We feel that Brendan Rodgers has bought some really exciting players. He’s invested a lot of money in youth in the hope that his eggs will hatch and create an amazing legacy for the club.
And we have to agree that he has bought some technically promising players. But we are a little concerned for Liverpool because they still haven’t bought many finished articles. You can only put 11 players on the pitch at once and Liverpool haven’t even come close to buying a ready made match winner to replace Suarez.
Yes Markovic has unbelievable potential and will certainly feature in Liverpool’s end of season highlights package. So too Lallana, who can cut though defences like a chainsaw through jelly, with his wonderful balance.
But we would argue that none of these guys is yet a proven match winner like Luis. Suarez turned so many draws in to wins and Liverpool will definitely feel his absence at certain times.
And we think that Liverpool need to buy one really mature, top talent to add to the wonderful promise of youth.
Rumours have been rife this week that Ezequiel Lavezzi could move on from PSG this summer. The Argentine didn’t feature in the promo shots for the new season (Cavani was another notable absentee) and that has lead some to believe that he’s off. A tenuous link perhaps but The Express reported that Liverpool are keen to sign him after the Remy deal fell through.
Liverpool have frequently been linked with a bid for the Argentine striker, but the news of his possible exit could accelerate a deal.
Lavezzi is a fully formed, quality international. At 29 he’s at the height of his powers and he’s as much a creator as he is a finisher. He can sit in behind the speedy talents of Sturridge, Sterling, Markovic et al and conduct the orchestra with his football intelligence and great skill.
Liverpool have loads of pace in the side now. What they need, for our money, is a canny operator, an ice cold professional to bind it all together. As such, we think that Lavezzi would prove to be Liverpool’s best signing of the summer.
Liverpool have bought a huge amount of potential. Now they need proven class. Lavezzi is the man.
Let’s see him in full flow. Liverpool fans: a wise investment of would you rather some more raw pace?
