Arsenal have been in desperate need of a holding midfielder for at least three or four years now. It’s anyone’s guess why Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has taken such an age to delve into the market and address this key problem.
Perhaps he felt that the persistently injured About Diaby would eventually come back and do the trick. We are big fans of Diaby and although he could still be a future solution, there have to be ongoing doubts about his fitness considering his track record.
Arsenal need to invest and if the Khedira deal goes south then perhaps they will go for William Carvalho. Reports over the weekend suggested that Arsenal had made a bid for the Portuguese wonder kid.
And The Daily Mail, among others, report that a new bid is about to go in for the services of the inordinately talented youngster.
Arsenal make fresh enquiry for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho
The report goes on to say that the release clause is for £35.6m (45m Euros) and Sporting won’t budge on that figure.
At this price you instinctively feel that Carvalho will be too rich for a very prudent Wenger.
But, at 22, we strongly believe that he’s a very expensive gamble worth taking for Arsenal. He already plays the game with the nonchalant authority of Patrick Viera. He makes football look simple with his majestic passing and his one and two touch game.
He also plays with a similar languid swagger to Viera and looks as if he already has the physique to impose himself on The Premier League.
Everyone loves an expensive young signing – someone who gets better, week on week, in front on your very eyes.
So, while we feel that Wenger will want a much cheaper deal, it seems that 45m Euros is the price he will have to pay if he wants to bring this wonderful talent to the club.
Let’s see the lad stroking the ball around as if he’s having a kick about with his mates in the park.
