And that word is ‘Authority’.
Louis van Gaal has it in abundance and his first press conference was full of it.
When David Moyes took the helm at Manchester United last summer, bless him, he squirmed around his chair like a school boy. He forgot the name of Ashley Young and generally struggled to impose himself on his first public address.
But there was none of that with Louis – he was pure class – composure and purpose personified.
One moment summed it up. When he was asked a question which was arguably a bit repetitive he gave a short and stern reminder of the previous question before dismissively moving on, while barely concealing his disdain.
Van Gaal doesn’t need the blessing of the media. He’s not trying to get them onside and he doesn’t care what they think. He’s exactly the sort of strong personality that Manchester United needs right now. The visionary who can plant his ideas into the squad and watch them bloom.
Sir Alex Ferguson was one of the most authoritative figures to ever manage in the game. After his departure a huge vacuum was created that Moyes found impossible to fill.
But, in a twenty minute interview, Louis van Gaal has shown the world that he is exactly the man to fill Fergie’s shoes – for a critical few years anyway – and steer Manchester United back towards the top.
