Manchester United’s next major signing?

The Theatre Of Dreams

Worth the risk?

It looks almost certain that Manchester United will buy a defensive midfielder through the summer.

LvG clearly understands the need for someone to come into that position and Manchester United don’t currently have an obvious candidate from their existing squad.

And, depending on who you read (including the essential soccersweep of course), the media seems to have shortlisted 4 such players for a potential move to Manchester United.

Of these Toni Kroos could could well be on his way to Real Madrid based on the latest reports.

Sami Khedira’s future is also up in the air and he might be on Arsenal’s wish list.

Nigel de Jong looks like a serious and feasible target for Manchester United but he did get injured in Holland’s latest game against Mexico, which could cloud an immediate move.

The other player to be linked for a long time is Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The Daily Mail today reports that moves are being made to sign the player:

Portuguese reports claim Manchester United have sent a delegation to negotiate a fee for Sporting Lisbon midfielder William Carvalho.

The 22-year-old has been an on-off target for United over recent months with concerns that he is over-priced at £37.5million – his buy-out clause.

He’s an excellent young player but the idea of paying his reported £37.5 million release clause seems fanciful and too costly.

At 22 years of age, and having never played outside Portugal, it would represent a huge gamble.

If the deal went wrong at 25 million then Manchester United could at least expect a 15m sell on fee. But if he fails at the price being mooted Manchester United could have another Fellaini sized potential loss on their hands.

On the flip side, he looks like a top midfield general in the making. He’s got fantastic composure for one so young and always looks to have time on the ball. He’s a great passer of the ball and also has excellent instincts for the game.

He reminds us somewhat of Yaya Toure, the way he plays the game with such languid ease and effortlessness. If he can add goals to his game Manchester United could be getting a top player for 10 years.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans – a gamble worth taking?
