Recent reports have suggested that Newcastle are on the verge of signing their first striker of the summer – 20 year old Ayoze Perez of Tenerife for around £1.8m.

It’s about time that some forwards came in as Newcastle are glaringly short in that department. Various other names will float about all summer and one that has resurfaced of late is that of Bafetimbi Gomis.

The Lyon striker is out of contract this summer and doesn’t look as if his contract will be renewed at the French club. Gomis has scored goals wherever he has played and Newcastle may look to snap him up on a free transfer this summer. The Mail reported earlier:

Bafetimbi Gomis is back on the agenda for Newcastle United.

Manager Alan Pardew has a £1.6million deal agreed with Tenerife for 20-year-old striker Ayoze Perez but is also working on signing another forward.

They have held talks with Hertha Berlin’s Pierre-Michel Lasogga, 22, but face competition with Everton also interested.

Gomez played 142 league games for St.Etienne in France between 2004-2009 including a loan spell to Troyes. During that 5 year period he bagged 46 league goals.

But it was at Lyon where his profile was really heightened and he started his career there really well. Overall he netted 62 goals in 172 games in a fairly competitive league.

The mark of any player is how many international caps they have and Gomis has turned out 12 times for the French international side during a period of real strength in their squad. He’s scored three goals for Les Bleus. All in all this guy is of high calibre.

We think he looks like a low risk investment and one that we think Newcastle should definitely take. Gomis is a quick player with good technique and also likes to get stuck in so could become a fan favourite in Newcastle.

Let’s have a look at the lad in action. Newcastle fans are you keen on Gomis or should you be raising the bar in terms of striker signings?
