Arsenal: Wenger reportedly confident of deal – but more needed?

One area sorted?

There has been constant debate over the last five years about Arsenal’s need for stronger defenders to replace the likes of Tony Adams and Sol Campbell.

But those arguments have been quelled to a certain degree this year by the brilliant form of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscielny.

Their excellent partnership and individual form has meant that club captain Thomas Vermaelen has hardly had a look in this term.

Mertesacker started shakily at Arsenal and was thought by some Gunners fans to be too one-paced for a successful Premier League side. But, in typical German fashion, he has meticulously learnt the English game and become a model of efficiency as the season has worn on.

And reports suggest that his partner Lauren Koscielny could be close to signing a new long term contract with the club.

The Mirror says:

Arsene Wenger is confident of tying Laurent Koscielny down to a new five-year contract.

The Gunners’ boss has been securing a series of new contracts for his players and Koscielny is the latest to have negotiations, which should fend off interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the France international.

As his stock has risen the 28 year old has been linked with that move to Paris St. Germain but it seems as if he’s now going to commit his future to The Gunners.

Koscielny provides the mobility and pace that his German colleague perhaps lacks and they have become a formidable partnership for Arsenal. He’s also got good enough feet to provide a threat going forward and he’s chipped in with a couple this season.

So, Arsenal fans, do you still need to invest in the centre back department or can the club prioritise other areas of the squad if Koscielny does sign?
