With nothing else to concentrate on Liverpool are 12 games from the glory of Champions League football next season. With that status comes the ability to sign better players over the summer. It’s a domino effect which every top team craves and needs in order to compete at the top table of football.
You would have to say right now that Liverpool look nailed on for top four. Not just because of their points tally but because of the way they are currently performing – it’s liquid football as far as we can see.
But there are obvious areas that need improvement over the summer – one of those is the left back position. Liverpool have been linked with many left backs over the last year but haven’t enjoyed too much success with acquiring players for that area of the park.
One player who has been linked more than once to Liverpool is Chelsea’s England international Ashley Cole. If there is any substance to these reports it could be one of the more interesting transfers of the summer. Cole has lost his place in the Chelsea team to a right back, which suggests that his days at Stamford Bridge are seriously numbered.
But, at 33, he still has much to offer. He is a natural athlete who hasn’t suffered many serious injuries in his career. So he could play another couple of years at the top. Even in the short term it would make a lot of sense for Liverpool to sign a player of such calibre – particularly if a long-term solution isn’t yet available or ready.
The Metro again raises the prospect, today, of him joining Liverpool in the summer:
Chelsea and England defender Ashley Cole is reportedly attracting interest from Liverpool over a free transfer move to Anfield this summer.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers seems keen, in general, to invest in youth. But some situations require short term solutions. Ashley Cole could be surplus to requirements at Chelsea and might do a fantastic job at Liverpool next season.
Let’s see him in action. Liverpool fans – worth a punt?
