Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger kept his cards very close to his chest with regards new recruits in the transfer window. While many Arsenal fans were sure that the manager would put all his eggs in the striker basket, in terms of new recruits in January, it became increasingly clear that he was keen on a player who could operate in several positions.
The name Julian Draxler became prominent in relation to Arsenal as January wore on and, towards the end of the window, it seemed that a huge deal could be done. Until now we were unsure as to how far those negotiations went. But the sporting director of Schalke has spilled the beans to confirm that an offer was made – and, in so doing, given Arsenal a clear understanding of what is required to prise the brilliant youngster from the German club in the summer.
Horst Heldt told German television channel SPORT1:
‘It was a lot of money, but it wasn’t enough for us.’
So, it looks as if the deal could still be on in the close season on the condition that Arsenal make a bigger bid. The same report suggests that the player’s release clause is a staggering £37.3m. But, you would imagine that a bid in excess of £30m would bring Schalke back to the bargaining table.
At 20 years of age Draxler has a dozen years of top football in the tank and already looks like a pass master with a great engine and eye for goal. His stock will rise further with a good World Cup, so it would make sense for Arsenal to try to get a deal done early, if they still want the player.
