Manchester United to sign the next Yaya Toure?

The next Toure?

This one has been simmering along for a while and, as we have long maintained at soccersweep, there is usually no smoke without fire.

Manchester United are currently scouring Europe for midfielders to dominate The Premier League. The engine room currently lacks penetration, guile and belief and serious money will have to be spent in the summer if Manchester United are going to rise back to the top. A bigger question is whether David Moyes will still be around to spend the cash.

Assuming that the Manchester United board keep faith with the hapless Scot then we may well see a young Portuguese maestro at Old Trafford. Rumours have persistently suggested that Manchester United are tracking William Carvalho, with United scouts reportedly watching him on several occasions of late. Some say he’s been scouted 8 times by Manchester United this season! Which implies that they are either super keen or really unsure about whether to sign him.

He has a stunning release clause of £37m but, watching this guy up close, he does look like the real deal. For our money the best central midfielder in The Premier League, by some way, is Yaya Toure of Manchester City. He does his defensive duties superbly but there is so much more to his game. He sets up countless attacks with his brilliant passing and also has a fierce shot on him – he’s the ultimate modern powerhouse for the engine room – the envy of all Europe.

But Carvalho looks as if he’s cut from the same cloth. Physically he has similarly imposing height and size as Toure – no mean feat at the tender age of 21.

He’s a really keen competitor in the defensive part of his game. But he also has lovely feet. He strokes the ball around with such composure that he often resembles a part timer having a kick about in the garden. But he has real precision in his passing and he also loves to get the ball forward. He’s a very progressive and adventurous player in that respect. He’s not yet known for his scoring but, like Toure, that could develop later – Toure only scored 4 goals in 80 league appearances for Barcelona but already has 15 for Manchester City this season. What a player!

Overall, we think that £37m would be expensive for someone who’s untested in England. But his game looks very mature and he has the talent to be a really top player.

Let’s see him in action. Manchester United fans. Is Carvalho worth the money?
