United tipped to end window strongly

Manchester United have a dream in the last few days with the signing of Spanish maestro Juan Mata. Before that it was hard to see where the major deal was going to come from in January. But this deal seems as if it could have broken the seal on more transfer business, if not this month then certainly in June.

When asked if Manchester United were going to do any more business in January David Moyes said, it would be difficult, but he was still in the market. He told reporters:

“What I will say is that this is the first of many more to come in time. I’m looking forward to Juan being the start of it.

“I don’t think we’ll have any more in January. I’m still working on it and looking to do things — we know exactly what we’d like to do and if it changes in the last week, which sometimes it can do, then we’ll try.

The fact that the Manchester United boss didn’t say anything about Mata until the deal was done tells you everything you need to know about his current transfer policy. After getting bitten in the summer, Moyes will no longer expose his transfer plans until they are signed, sealed and delivered.

But when he talked about knowing exactly what he wanted, this is who we think Manchester United would buy in January if they could.

Luke Shawrumours were rife over the weekend that Manchester United may have submitted a bid for young England player. We think that now would be the perfect time to sign Shaw. With Patrice Evra maybe leaving the club in the summer it would be of immeasurable benefit to the young star to get six months of tutelage from one of the game’s best left backs – a seamless transition in our view. Manchester United should do everything they possibly can to sign the player in January before a huge bidding war ensues in the summer.

Toni Kroos – A box to box midfielder of the highest quality. At just 24 years of age he has an incredible understanding of the game and also knows where the onion bag is. With his best years ahead of him we think that he would be a superb signing for Manchester United and their rather stale looking midfield. With Carrick injured and Anderson gone Manchester United need a central midfielder more than ever.
