Arsenal signing still on?

Arsene Wenger clearly has a penchant for midfielders. With the loss of Theo Walcott for the season you would imagine that the need for another striker in January would be even more urgent.

Yet the lion’s share of the gossip this week, in relation to Arsenal, has been about the brilliant young Germany midfielder Julian Draxler.

All manner of news outlets have run the story this week that the player, who is valued in the region of £35-40m (depending where you get your information), is a top target for Arsene Wenger. The player has even been linked to RvP.

But, you would imagine that his injury, sustained in trainign earlier in the week, would have curtailed Arsenal’s plans to sign him – at least in January. The Metro said of the injury:

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Julian Draxler have taken a hit after it was reported the Schalke midfielder will miss up to three months with a ruptured tendon.

The Gunners were believed to be considering a £35million swoop for the 20-year-old in the hope of converting the attacker into the next Robin van Persie, but Draxler’s injury seems to have put paid to speculation over a January move.

Nevertheless bookmaker SkyBet seems confident that the player will sign for Arsneal, not in the summer, but in the Janaury window. They have Arsenal as clear favourites for his signature at an odds on 5/6. Next come Bayern Munich way back at 8/1.

As a portent of the player’s ability, Draxler has already managed 10 caps for a golden generation Germany squad with countless top midfielders, even at the tender age of 20. He’s a composed yet dynamic player who is developing a really good eye for goal – he has 14 in 89 games for his current club Schalke.

We shall keep you updated on developments. Meantime let’s see the boy in action.
