The beauty in Liverpool’s season so far is two-fold. Not only are they playing their best and most winning football in years. But, in the rare times of defeat, they only need to look down the road to Manchester to revive their spirits.

Because, while Liverpool soar, Manchester United are having a monumentally terrible time of it. Some reckon that United are about to embark on a Liverpool style two decades in the abyss. Perhaps David Moyes is a Liverpool fan after all!

But the good folk of Liverpool, famous for their sense of dignity, will be far more focused on their own success than the failures of others. Brendan Rodgers is a man in a hurry to make up for an inexplicable period without the title and, even by his estimations, he must feel he’s ahead of schedule.

But, while Liverpool now possess a great team, they still lack the great squad. Rodgers will surely try to invest again in January and one area of concern is the left back spot. With Jose Enrique injured, Aly Cissokho hasn’t really done enough to nail down a spot in the team or a permanent move to Liverpool.

Loads of names have been bandied around about who Liverpool might sign to strengthen at left fullback. In an interesting development SkyBet have made Liverpool an outside bet to sign Chelsea’s out of favour worldie Ashley Cole.

At 33 he hasn’t got that long left but he’s still a super athlete whose bones haven’t been sullied by particularly bad injuries through his career. He’s still fit as a fiddle and would stroll into most sides in The Premier League.

Real Madrid are favourites with the bookie at 6/1 and you could easily imagine him fancying a move to Spain as a swan song. But second favourites with PSG at 16/1 are Liverpool. An outside bet certainly and Liverpool are spending most of they money on younger players these days. But with the squad looking thin we wouldn’t be surprised if Brendan Rodegrs had a punt on Ashley Cole. He could be the difference between a good season and a trophy winning one for Liverpool come May.

Let’s remind ourselves of the class of Cole.
