After an embarrassing summer window, in which only the painfully conventional Maroune Fellaini came in, David Moyes will be looking to make amends in January.
He is absolutely crying out for a creative midfielder and will surely be scouring Europe in his attempts to find one in the winter window.
Last week, we reported on links with Ilkay Gundogan and Marco Reus, both of Borussia Dortmund. The German club seems to have no end of awesome attacking midfielders – they also sold Mario Gotze to Munich in the summer while Shinji Kagawa arrived at Old Trafford from Dortmund 18 months ago.
But The Mail today suggests that neither of these newly mooted deals is likely to go through.
David Moyes is facing more transfer frustration, following claims in Germany that his top target Marco Reus has already turned down the chance of joining Manchester City.
The Manchester United manager wants Reus to add more creativity to his midfield and is also keen on the 24-year old’s Borussia Dortmund team-mate Ilkay Gundogan
But his planned double raid on Dortmund appears doomed, following the steps taken to safeguard Reus’ position with the Bundesliga side and news that Real Madrid believe they are in pole position to land Gundogan.
They are both superb players in the strictest sense – a cut above the rest. Both would do a fantastic job at Manchester United. But with so much competition for the top talent it’s going to be a struggle for Manchester United to bring in a high-profile playmaker in January.
