Many of us feel that Arsenal still need to strengthen in one or two areas if they are to make a substantial fist of the title race. They are flying high right now and who is to say that it won’t continue? Well, us, actually. Along with Liverpool Arsenal are playing the best football in the league right now.
But The Gunners have suffered two defeats by the heavyweights over the last fortnight and Liverpool are in town this weekend. Anything other than a victory and the alarm bells will be ringing loud once more.
The patent fact is that, for all their beauty, Arsenal need more power up front and in the heart of their defence. Even if Olivier Giroud ends up as The Premier League top score, he will still need a break at some stage. Arsenal don’t currently have someone to step in and offer similar quality.
As the winter window approaches it’s interesting to note that SkyBet have Arsenal as favourites to sign Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema this January.
Having sold Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli Real only have the young Alvaro Morata and Benzema as conventional strikers in the squad. But, with Bale and Ronaldo both deployed there periodically, Real hardly lack for firepower.
Despite scoring 57 in 133 games for his current employer, Real fans seem underwhelmed by The Frenchman. If Madrid make a successful bid to sign Luis Suarez, for example, Benzema will surely be surplus to requirements.
Arsene Wenger is a long term admirer of the sleek Benzema and his agent recently suggested that a Premier League club is after him. The Metro said:
‘A very important Premier League club is after Karim,’ Gallardo told Le Sport 10.
‘This club wants the transfer to happen this winter, but if this is not possible, then next summer at the latest.
‘The offer will be around €50million [£43million].’
