One of the Arsenal top brass has fanned the flickering flames of the potential transfer of Wayne Rooney to Arsenal by speaking publicly about signing the Manchester United star.
The Daily Mail states that Alisher Usmanov, the Russian billionaire who has a reported 30% stake in Arsenal, has told CNBC :
‘He is a great player and [joining Arsenal] would be great for Rooney, and Arsenal too.’
This isn’t exactly a revelation. Rooney would of course improve Arsenal as he would most sides in the world. For a team that has has so much quality, but arguably lacks a little steel, The Manchester United star would be a dream acquisition for Arsenal. He not only has great touch and football vision but can also mix it with the toughest defenders in The Premier League. Never one to pull out of a challenge, Rooney has dragged Manchester United through countless games, in which they haven’t performed well but ultimately won.
But, in the end, we just can’t see Rooney leaving Manchester United. David Moyes will surely look to keep one of his biggest assets at the club, precisely because of the aforementioned qualities which are so rare and so vital if you have serious designs to win The Premier League. The media speculates regularly about a clear the air meeting between Rooney and his club when David Moyes returns from his holiday and takes up his post at Manchester United on July 1st. We may be wrong, but we think that preliminary talks have surely already taken place between the two most important people at Old Trafford. It’s only a phone call for god’s sake.
Stranger things have of course happened and Arsenal will perhaps spend big money this summer but, in our opinion, the Wayne Rooney link is one of the less likely to materialise.
