The seemingly endless line of young Spanish midfielders shows no sign of abating. If England could have just a couple of them what a difference it could make the national team. Spain, meanwhile, seem to unearth a new midfield pass master every week. It’s just not fair. But let’s view the glass as half full shall we? If, for example, Arsenal’s Jack Wilshere was Spanish the press would surely be talking about him as the next latin messiah.
Anyway, back to business. The Arsenal transfer kitty has been spoken about often but has yet to be touched this summer. Gonzalo Higuain has been heavily linked with the club as Arsenal look to bolster there arguably lightweight attack. But The Daily Mail has also suggested of late that The Gunners are looking to invest in youth with the signign of highly promising Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi. At 23 he still doesn’t have a full international cap but, being Spanish, this is no disgrace. What he does have is 54 games under his belt for Sociedad as a technical and efficient right-footed midfielder.
Illarramendi is more of a defensive midfielder than an advanced player and this is borne out by his lack of goals for club or country. But Arsenal are reportedly imnterested in a player who will apparently cost around £10m. The paper says:
The Gunners are leading the chase for Spain Under 21 international Asier Illarramendi.
The £10million-rated Real Sociedad defensive midfielder has been outstanding all season and has attracted attention from Real Madrid.
Arsenal have also been monitoring Gilbert Imbula – as revealed in Sportsmail – but Illaramendi would fit well alongside fellow Basque Mikel Arteta.
If reports are to be believed Arsenal are looking to strengthen in every department this summer but, Arsenal fans, which areas of the team do you think need most urgent attention? And is Higuain the man for the job up front or would you rather see another big money signing in his stead?
Let’s have your thoughts on this one. Meanwhile let’s have a look at the lad in action
