Chelsea still favourites with bookie to sign Frenchman

Since Jose Mourinho’s return to Chelsea the sports media has wasted no time in linking bucket loads of stars with a move to West London. Chelsea are usually linked with big money moves for strikers and playmakers but there is a sense that an ageing defence will also need some attention before long.

Some feel that John Terry has run out of gas. We reckon that Jose is planning to coax another top season out of the creaking yet still imperious defender. But question marks remain over the defending ability of David Luiz and the overall quality of Gary Cahill. Is he a really top European defender? I’m not sure that Jose would see him that way. This leaves the rock steady Branislav Ivanovic, but he may yet be asked to play at right-back.

Porto’s Eliaquim Mangala is one of the few defensive players to have been mentioned in the same sentence as Chelsea. But, Skybet are offering very short odds on a player from another of Jose’s former clubs making the trip to Chelsea. After coming on in leaps and bounds over the last year, Real Madrid would surely be loathe to let their young Frenchman, Raphael Varane leave the Bernabeu. The 20 year old played 24 times for Madrid last season and was increasingly regarded as a first teamer as the season progressed. Manchester United bid for him before he went to Real and he is clearly on course for a top career in the game.

At 3/1 to join Chelsea, perhaps the bookies know something we don’t. Surely Jose would love to get one over on Real Madrid after a torrid few years in charge of the club. Real Madrid will be in no rush to sell a player who also broke into the French senior side this year but, as we all know by now, players have much of the power in transfer negotiations these days.

Whether Jose will be able to prise such an asset from Madrid remains debatable but there is a feeling in some quarters that the Chelsea defence will be tended to sooner rather than later. Click the link below to see the lad in action.
