Wayne Rooney wants to leave Manchester United. For Chelsea?

As if the sudden retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson wasn’t enough for Manchester United fans to take on board, the can of worms is now fully ajar this morning. The Guardian, among others, have stated assertively that Wayne Rooney has once again told the club that he wants to leave Manchester United this summer.

The meeting between Fergie and Rooney occurred a couple of weeks ago, apparently before Rooney knew anything about Fergie’s departure. The boss dismissed Rooney’s plea out of hand. It is unclear, at this point, whether Rooney would reconsider his position should David Moyes join the club. Moyes would surely love the chance to coach Rooney back to the boil – a player who he sold to Manchester United from Everton in 2004. Their relationship has been rocky in the past but the last few years have seen peace break out between the two.

The Guardian says:

David Moyes’s first challenge on succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as Manchester United manager will be to persuade Wayne Rooney to stay at the club after the striker asked to leave a fortnight ago.

Rooney held showdown talks with Ferguson in which the 27-year-old told the outgoing manager he wanted a fresh start. But Ferguson informed Rooney, who has two years remaining on his contract, the wish would not be granted and that he still had a future at United.

While many at Manchester Untied will be desperate to keep the England striker at Manchester United to see him return to talismanic status within the club, others may feel that Rooney has now made one transfer request too many. Perhaps the most shocking part of the article is that sources close to Rooney have suggested that he doesn’t want to move abroad and would instead look for a move to a club like Chelsea. While Chelsea would clearly be interested in a top form Rooney, it is hard to imagine him making a smooth transition between two such huge rivals in England.

The Telegraph says of this latest hornet’s nest:

It is understood that Rooney, 27, has no desire to move away from the Premier League and that Chelsea is his most likely destination.

A summer of major transition looks to be taking place at Manchester United and Chelsea.
