Chelsea

The perfect alternative to Radamel Falcao

I can’t remember a time when there wasn’t talk of Chelsea needing a striker. Even for the last few years of Drogba and Anelka there were constant rumours of Chelsea sharpening their teeth in attack with the signing of another superstar forward.

But, as we all know, Chelsea’s superstar striker signings haven’t always worked. Shevchenko arrived as a titan and left resembling a chain smoking, manic depressive. Fernando Torres who, lest we forget came for an astonishing £50m, is suffering a similar fate.

Perhaps the latest long term target, Radamel Falcao, was mindful of this when he stated last week that he wasn’t planning to leave Atletico after all.

“I have a contract with Atletico for three more years, therefore, that’s the best option,”

Billions of words must have been expended on the idea that Falcao is Chelsea’s next big signing. And so it might still be. But perhaps Chelsea should look closer to home for their next mainstay striker.

Even with the new style that Chelsea are trying to garner, surely anyone at the club would love to get a 25 year old Didier Drogba back to lead the line. His hustle and bustle might not reflect the tiki taka style that Hazard, Mata Oscar represent, but he was one of the most effective players that the club has ever had.

In Romelu Lukaku, Chelsea already have the nearest thing to just that. Lukaku has had a superb season on loan at West Brom, scoring his tenth league goal of the season in the defeat of Liverpool last week. But it’s not just goals that he brings to the party. He also adds the sort of physicality to a team which has been sorely missed since Drogba departed Chelsea last summer.

Roman Abramovich seems to like the expensive solution. He’s never shy to spend £30m+ on a ready made star. And this is also exciting for the fans. But, surely their striker solution lies much closer to home and wouldn’t cost a penny. Lukaku should get his chance at Stamford Bridge next season. If he doesn’t, expect bids from other big clubs in England, because this lad is class.

Yes,lukaku should be afforded the opportunity to discover himself. promising youngsters should be allowed to become a superstar. Abramovich please, resist the urge to spend big at every window transfer. A number of loanee players should be absorbed into chelsea first team and be made to compete. Besides, what has become of the mexican attacking midfielder?
