Van Persie wait nearly over for Manchester United and City

It’s been coming to the boil for some time and will be remembered as the most high profile Premier League transfer of the summer. It has certainly been one of the most contentious in recent times.

What is interesting about this story, from a neutral perspective, is that there doesn’t appear to be an outright favourite for the signature of Van Persie. The Mirror today reasserts the opinion of some, that the Dutchman would prefer a move to Juventus.

‘…the sooner van Persie is sorted, the better. It’s my understanding that his preference is Juventus. Then Manchester United. And the chances of van Persie going to Manchester City are a distant third.’

But The Daily Mail reports that the Italian side also have a contingiency plan in the shape of Edin Dzeko.

‘The Italian side moved for Dzeko as bids to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal, or Fiorentina’s Stevan Jovetic, hang in the balance.’

The same report suggests that City rejected the offer, of around £15m, but if they do ultimately release Dzeko City will free up a striking berth for their top target – RVP, of course. It’s pretty obvious that Manchester City hold the aces in terms of financial clout. They have probably already made RVP’s agent aware that they will beat any salary tabled by Manchester United or Juve.

But Mancini is finally discovering that money doesn’t buy you everything and seems to be having a slight tantrum about it. The Independent quietly chortles,

‘Mancini has shoved the responsibility for the lack of new faces at the Etihad Stadium this summer on Blues’ football director Brian Marwood.’

and they go on to quote Mancini simmering…

“I am not in charge of this.

“It is important [to get players quickly] because, after what we did last year, we must continue to win.

“This year will be harder than last so we need to improve our team.

“We have a man who works for this and we hope that they can do a good job.”

There is a persistent rumour that RVP will buck the recent trend of players choosing City over United – if he does stay in England, many feel that he would prefer to play in red.

I’m sure that most Arsenal fans would prefer he went to Italy as a mark of respect for The Gunners. He may even decide to see out the final year of his contract at Arsenal, but that idea now seems a little unrealistic. It feels as if the striker has gone past the point of no return with Arsenal.

Either way, this is a deal which will happen soon because Arsene Wenger will go to great lengths to avoid a similar scenario to the Fabregas furore of August 2011. We are expecting serious developments on this one by the end of the week.

In my opinion I think rvp must clearly come out with the club he wants to ply his trade for next season. Indulging three big teams in an auction is simply not worth it. The kind of money arsenal are looking for is also absurd. Having in mind that the player could just wait and run up his contract and they could have nothing at the end of the day which will be more of a bad business to them. To van I feel he should choose unitted over the two other prospective teams. City think they have money and that they treat not only strikers but any other players so badly when they feel they are not needed anymore. The Italian game is more of a physical one and given van’s injury history with arsenals I think united would be a better option on the narrative so far.
